Monologue - Black Sun Empire

I don’t have to tell you things are bad.

Everybody knows things are bad.

It’s a depression.

Everybody’s out of work

or scared of losing their job.

The dollar buys a nickel’s worth;

banks are going bust;

shopkeepers keep a gun under the counter;

punks are running wild in the street,

and there’s nobody anywhere who seems to know what to do,

and there’s no end to it.

We know

the air is unfit to breathe

and our food is unfit to eat.

And we sit watching our TVs

while some local newscaster tells us

that today we had fifteen homicides

and sixty-three violent crimes,

as if that’s the way it’s supposed to be!

We all know things are bad —

worse than bad —

they’re crazy.

It’s like everything everywhere is going crazy,

so we don’t go out any more.

We sit in the house,

and slowly the world we’re living in is getting smaller,

and all we say is, «Please,

at least leave us alone in our living rooms.

Let me have my toaster and my TV

and my steel-belted radials,

and I won’t say anything.

Just leave us alone.»

Well, I’m not going to leave you alone.

I want you to get mad!

I don’t want you to protest.

I don’t want you to riot.

I don’t want you to write to your Congressman,

because I wouldn’t know what to tell you to write.

I don’t know what to do about the depression

and the inflation

and the Russians

and the crime in the street.

All I know is that first,

you’ve got to get mad.

You’ve gotta say,

«I'm a human being,

goddammit!

My life has value!»

(meaning?)

I want you

to get up now.

I want all of you

to get up out of your chairs.

I want you to get up right now

and go to the window,

open it,

and stick your head out and yell:

«I'm as mad as hell,

and I’m not going to take this anymore!!»

The world we’re living in is getting smaller,

and all we say is, «Please,

at least leave us alone in our living rooms.

Ich muss dir nicht sagen, dass die Dinge schlecht sind.

Jeder weiß, dass die Dinge schlecht sind.

Es ist eine Depression.

Alle sind arbeitslos

oder Angst, ihren Job zu verlieren.

Der Dollar kauft den Wert eines Nickels;

Banken gehen pleite;

Ladenbesitzer halten eine Waffe unter der Theke;

Punks rennen wild durch die Straßen,

und es gibt niemanden, der zu wissen scheint, was zu tun ist,

und es nimmt kein Ende.

Wir wissen

die Luft ist nicht zum Atmen geeignet

und unser Essen ist nicht essbar.

Und wir sitzen vor unseren Fernsehern

während ein lokaler Nachrichtensprecher es uns sagt

dass wir heute fünfzehn Morde hatten

und 63 Gewaltverbrechen,

als ob es so sein soll!

Wir alle wissen, dass die Dinge schlecht sind –

schlimmer als schlecht —

Sie sind verrückt.

Es ist, als würde alles überall verrückt werden,

also gehen wir nicht mehr aus.

Wir sitzen im Haus,

und langsam wird die Welt, in der wir leben, kleiner,

und alles, was wir sagen, ist: „Bitte,

lass uns wenigstens in unseren Wohnzimmern allein.

Lass mich meinen Toaster und meinen Fernseher haben

und meine Radials mit Stahlgürtel,

und ich werde nichts sagen.

Lass uns einfach in Ruhe.»

Nun, ich werde dich nicht allein lassen.

Ich möchte, dass du wütend wirst!

Ich möchte nicht, dass Sie protestieren.

Ich möchte nicht, dass du randalierst.

Ich möchte nicht, dass Sie Ihrem Kongressabgeordneten schreiben,

weil ich nicht wüsste, was ich dir sagen soll.

Ich weiß nicht, was ich gegen die Depression tun soll

und die Inflation

und die Russen

und das Verbrechen auf der Straße.

Alles, was ich weiß, ist, dass zuerst

du musst wütend werden.

Du musst sagen,

"Ich bin ein Mensch,

Gott verdammt!

Mein Leben hat Wert!»

(Bedeutung?)

Ich will dich

um jetzt aufzustehen.

Ich möchte alles von dir

von Ihren Stühlen aufzustehen.

Ich möchte, dass du sofort aufstehst

und geh zum Fenster,

öffne es,

und steck deinen Kopf raus und schrei:

«Ich bin wahnsinnig verrückt,

und ich nehme das nicht mehr hin!!»

Die Welt, in der wir leben, wird kleiner,

und alles, was wir sagen, ist: „Bitte,
