I miss the wicker chair and table freshly painted every spring

The old folks in the rocker, and the children in the swing

And the trellis by the railing where the brown thrush used to sing

I really miss the old front porch

And I miss the neighbor playin' banjo, singing songs of long ago

And the jokes we heard on headsets from our crystal radio

And the faint bouquet of lilacs as the breeze began to blow

I really miss the old front porch

It was a place to run from showers

For spending wondrous hours

Watching rainbows in the sky

For reading Sunday’s funnies

And hoping the Easter bunny

Might lay a basket there as he passed by

And I miss that pretty girl in pigtails looking like a dream in white

Who joined me in the shadows holding hands till late at night

It’s funny how the tears come back to dim my eyes tonight

I really miss the old front porch

I miss the jack-o-lantern pumpkins in the corner by the rail

And the window soaped on Halloween by some mischievous male

And the witches ridin' cornstalks, a ghostly fairy tale

I really miss the old front porch

And I miss the happy sounds of footsteps of a holiday surprise

The smiles of friends and relatives with Christmas in their eyes

And the snow stomped from boot lashes of every shape and size

I really miss the old front porch

It’s a place for apple pie

On the fourth day of July

A place to wave your country’s flag

A place for friends to share

Bursting fireworks in the air

And popcorn from a big brown bag

And I miss that valentine she left there in the mailbox by the door

The two hearts with an arrow from the little country store

You’d think that I wouldn’t care that I don’t get 'em anymore

But I do, I miss the old front porch

Die alten Leute in der Schaukel und die Kinder in der Schaukel

Und das Spalier am Geländer, wo früher die Bachdrossel gesungen hat

Ich vermisse die alte Veranda sehr

Und ich vermisse den Nachbarn, der Banjo spielt und Lieder aus längst vergangenen Zeiten singt

Und die Witze, die wir über Kopfhörer von unserem Kristallradio gehört haben

Und das schwache Bouquet von Flieder, als die Brise zu wehen begann

Ich vermisse die alte Veranda sehr

Es war ein Ort, an dem man vor Duschen davonlaufen konnte

Für wundersame Stunden

Regenbogen am Himmel beobachten

Zum Lesen der Sonntagswitze

Und auf den Osterhasen hoffen

Könnte dort einen Korb hinlegen, als er vorbeiging

Und ich vermisse dieses hübsche Mädchen mit Zöpfen, das wie ein Traum in Weiß aussieht

Wer sich mir im Schatten anschloss und bis spät in die Nacht Händchen hielt

Es ist lustig, wie die Tränen heute Abend zurückkommen, um meine Augen zu verdunkeln

Ich vermisse die alte Veranda sehr

Ich vermisse die Kürbislaternen in der Ecke am Geländer

Und das Fenster, das von einem schelmischen Mann an Halloween eingeseift wurde

Und die Hexen, die auf Maisstängeln reiten, ein gespenstisches Märchen

Ich vermisse die alte Veranda sehr

Und ich vermisse die fröhlichen Schritte einer Urlaubsüberraschung

Das Lächeln von Freunden und Verwandten mit Weihnachten in ihren Augen

Und der Schnee stampfte von Stiefeln jeder Form und Größe

Es ist ein Ort für Apfelkuchen

Am vierten Tag im Juli

Ein Ort, an dem Sie die Flagge Ihres Landes schwenken können

Ein Ort, den Freunde teilen können

Feuerwerk in der Luft

Und Popcorn aus einer großen braunen Tüte

Und ich vermisse den Valentinsgruß, den sie dort im Briefkasten neben der Tür hinterlassen hat

Die zwei Herzen mit einem Pfeil aus dem kleinen Landladen

Sie würden denken, dass es mir egal wäre, dass ich sie nicht mehr bekomme

Aber ich vermisse die alte Veranda
