Back through the years

I go wondering once again

Back to the seasons of my youth

And I recall a box of rags

Someone gave us

And how my mama put those rags to use

There where rags of many colors

And every piece was small

And I didn’t have a coat

And it was way down in the fall

Mama sewed the rags together

Sewing every piece with love

She made my coat of many colors

That I was so proud of

As she sewed she told a story

From the bible she had read

About a coat of many colors

Joseph wore and then she said

Perhaps this coat will bring you

Good luck and happiness

And I just couldn’t wait to wear it

And mama blessed it with ther kiss

Made from only rags

But I wore it so proudly

It’s true we had no money

But I was rich as I could be

And holes in both my shoes

I hurried off to school

Just to find the others laughing

And making fun of me

Was worth mode than all their clothes

But they didn’t understand it

And I tried to make them see

One is only poor

Only if they choose to be

It’s true we had no money

But I was rich as I could be

Und ich erinnere mich an eine Schachtel Lumpen

Jemand hat uns gegeben

Und wie meine Mama diese Lumpen verwendet hat

Dort waren Lumpen in vielen Farben

Und jedes Stück war klein

Und ich hatte keinen Mantel

Und es war im Herbst weit unten

Mama nähte die Lumpen zusammen

Jedes Stück mit Liebe nähen

Sie hat meinen Mantel in vielen Farben gemacht

Darauf war ich so stolz

Beim Nähen erzählte sie eine Geschichte

Aus der Bibel, die sie gelesen hatte

Über einen Mantel aus vielen Farben

Joseph trug und dann sagte sie

Vielleicht bringt dich dieser Mantel

Viel Glück und Glück

Und ich konnte es kaum erwarten, es zu tragen

Und Mama segnete es mit ihrem Kuss

Mein Mantel in vielen Farben

Das hat meine Mama für mich gemacht

Nur aus Lumpen gemacht

Aber ich trug es so stolz

Es stimmt, wir hatten kein Geld

Aber ich war so reich, wie ich nur sein konnte

Meine Mama hat für mich gemacht

Und so mit Flicken auf meinen Hosen

Und Löcher in meinen beiden Schuhen

Ich eilte zur Schule

Nur um die anderen lachen zu sehen

Und sich über mich lustig machen
