Well tell me, Diana, how did it all begin?

Diana Ross: Oh!

Mmmm.

Boy.

Long time now?

We started singing when we were about 13. We got together in the neighborhood,

because we all lived in the same neighborhood, and we went to the same church,

and Mary and Florence went to the same school.

But a group put us together,

really, the group now the Temptations, but after we came to Motown we changed

our name to a better name, you know, something that meant something

Bradshaw: And that was the Supremes?

Diana: That was the Supremes

Bradshaw: Well, how did you pick that name?

DIANA: Well, I didn’t really pick the name, because, uh, Florence did most of

the picking of the names.

But, uh, I didn’t like the name Supremes at first,

and she’ll tell you how she got that name

Bradshaw: Florence did?

Well, how about it?

Florence Ballard: I was given, um, a little teeny piece of paper,

with ten names on it, and I picked Supremes because it was different, and, um,

I liked it, and at that time we needed it because we had a record coming out

the next day

Bradshaw: I see!

Well I think everyone’s familiar with the Supremes now.

You girls must have traveled, I guess, hundreds of thousands of miles all over

the world entertaining fans.

Um, Florence, what’s your most unusual experience

when on tour?

FLO: Um

Mary Wilson: You remember the one in Germany?!

Diana: She doesn’t have to think long on that, because we know two that were

really great

Mary: You remember the one in Germany?!

Flo: Yes, I remember the one in Germany, Mary.

We was singing with a

pre-recorded tape, and, uh, we was just dancing and singing, and the tape broke!

Mary: Oh!

Flo: Yes.

So you can imagine what we went through.

But we kept going, and, um,

the show went on

Bradshaw: Right.

Where, what part of Germany was that?

Flo: Hamburg

Bradshaw: Oh, I see!

Well I think we saw some newspaper headings in which they

praised you all on the front page for your showmanship as a result

Flo: Yeah, the next day

Mary: The next day!

Diana: The very next day

Flo: Early the next morning

Bradshaw: Well, what happens in a situation like that, um, how do you get your

note, I mean, what do you sing about?

Diana: Well, we, whenever we’re singing, we just continue to sing and pop our

fingers and get a feeling, but at that time, or any time when we’re sitting

around to rehearse, we… whatever we’re thinking about, we sing it, y’know?

Just like right now…

Bradshaw: Anything that’s on your mind?

Diana: Anything that’s on your mind.

Because it’s rehearsing, and…

Bradshaw: What’s on your mind right now?

Diana: We just try to all harmonize, y’know, and make it, Like, right now?

Flo: Boys

Bradshaw: Well, that sounded lovely

Bradshaw: When you girls get a rare moment to relax, what are your hobbies?

Mary: Well, uh, we all have different hobbies.

Mine is cooking.

You wouldn’t

really say that’s a hobby, but it’s mine.

I love to cook.

For boys, and uh, And,

uh, like, Florence, now, she likes to bowl.

I guess she’s energetic,

I don’t know, I guess she is.

And Diane, she used to like to design dresses

Diana: Yeah, I did that in school.

Mostly now I think I like to collect a lot

of jewelry, and different odd, y’know, little odd shoes and…

Bradshaw: Little old diamonds and things like that!

DIANA: No!

No, jus

Flo: Diamond rings!

Diana: No!

Mary: Diamonds

Bradshaw: Speaking of fashion and jewelry, you girls have a lovely flair for

dress both on stage and off.

How do you decide what you’re going to wear?

Mary: Well, we go to different towns, and whatever we see, we like one person

might not like it, but the other two like it, we get it!

Diana: One thing, we constantly shop because we have to, we need a lot of

things for a lot of different shows, so we constantly shop

Bradshaw: Well I can understand that.

Now, here’s a tough question — I know

it’s unfair to you, but who are your favorite artists, just a few of them?

Mary?

Mary: Well, let’s see now.

I love the Four Tops, and I love the Temptations,

and Well, there are so many!

Like Nancy Wilson, I really, I, y’know,

she’s my idol, so, and some more, but I can’t call their name

Bradshaw: Well, I see, I think you’ve done well.

How about it, Florence?

Flo: Well I tend to like the male vocalists best.

Mary: Yeah, I bet!

Bradshaw: Well, I can understand that!

Flo: Like Johnny Mathis, and Elvis Presley

Mary: Oh boy!

Flo: Matter o’fact, all of 'em

Flo: And, um, I can’t leave out the British groups.

I think, um… Well,

I don’t have to think, I know!

I like the Beatles

Bradshaw: Well I think you’ve got a lot of company there.

What about you, Diana?

Diana: Well, not just the Beatles, I love them really, but there’s so many

British groups that we met when we were over there that, uh, were really very

good groups and also good friends, but as we were in London, we saw the Lena

Horne show, and they were very fabulous performers, they had an act laid out

that was beautiful, you know?

Also, nobody but: Marvin Gaye

Flo: We love him!

Bradshaw: Okay!

Well now that you girls have become, I’d say, America’s and the

world’s number one singing group, what are your plans for the future?

Diana?

Diana: Well we’ve got, um, we’ve got great plans.

Right now, we’re going into

bigger and better club work all over the country, and, uh, we have bookings in

London, and here in New York and everything.

But, uh, we all want to go into,

uh, acting.

We’re big hams, you know what I mean?

We act on and off stage!

But other than that, we’re going to always continue to make records for our

fans, because this we love, and we want to do something that will make them

happy and that also makes us happy too

Bradshaw: Well I think as long as you continue to sing as well as you do,

you’ll make your fans more than happy.

Schon lange her?

Wir fingen an zu singen, als wir ungefähr 13 waren. Wir trafen uns in der Nachbarschaft,

weil wir alle in derselben Nachbarschaft lebten und in dieselbe Kirche gingen,

und Mary und Florence gingen auf dieselbe Schule.

Aber eine Gruppe hat uns zusammengebracht,

wirklich, die Gruppe ist jetzt die Temptations, aber nachdem wir zu Motown gekommen sind, haben wir uns geändert

unser Name zu einem besseren Namen, weißt du, etwas, das etwas bedeutete

Bradshaw: Und das waren die Supremes?

Diana: Das waren die Supremes

Bradshaw: Nun, wie haben Sie diesen Namen ausgewählt?

DIANA: Nun, ich habe den Namen nicht wirklich ausgewählt, weil, äh, Florence das meiste gemacht hat

die Auswahl der Namen.

Aber, äh, ich mochte den Namen Supremes anfangs nicht,

und sie wird dir erzählen, wie sie zu diesem Namen kam

Bradshaw: Florence hat?

Nun, wie wäre es damit?

Florence Ballard: Mir wurde, ähm, ein kleines Stück Papier gegeben,

mit zehn Namen darauf, und ich habe Supremes ausgewählt, weil es anders war, und, ähm,

Ich mochte es und damals brauchten wir es, weil wir eine Platte herausbringen wollten

der nächste Tag

Bradshaw: Ich verstehe!

Nun, ich denke, jetzt kennt jeder die Supremes.

Ihr Mädels müsst, glaube ich, Hunderttausende von Kilometern überall hin gereist sein

die Welt, die Fans unterhält.

Ähm, Florence, was ist dein ungewöhnlichstes Erlebnis?

Flo: Ähm

Mary Wilson: Erinnerst du dich an den in Deutschland?!

Diana: Da muss sie nicht lange überlegen, denn wir kennen zwei, die das waren

echt super

Mary: Erinnerst du dich an den in Deutschland?!

Flo: Ja, ich erinnere mich an den in Deutschland, Mary.

Wir haben mit a gesungen

vorbespieltes Band, und, äh, wir haben nur getanzt und gesungen, und das Band ist kaputt gegangen!

Maria: Ach!

Flo: Ja.

Sie können sich also vorstellen, was wir durchgemacht haben.

Aber wir machten weiter und, ähm,

die Show ging weiter

Bradshaw: Richtig.

Wo, welcher Teil von Deutschland war das?

Flo: Hamburg

Bradshaw: Oh, verstehe!

Nun, ich glaube, wir haben einige Zeitungsüberschriften gesehen, in denen sie

hat Sie alle auf der Titelseite für Ihre Showmanier als Ergebnis gelobt

Flo: Ja, am nächsten Tag

Maria: Am nächsten Tag!

Diana: Gleich am nächsten Tag

Flo: Früh am nächsten Morgen

Bradshaw: Nun, was passiert in einer Situation wie dieser, ähm, wie bekommst du deine

beachte, ich meine, worüber singst du?

Diana: Nun, wir, immer wenn wir singen, singen und knallen wir einfach weiter

Finger und bekomme ein Gefühl, aber zu dieser Zeit oder zu jeder Zeit, wenn wir sitzen

um zu proben, wir … was auch immer wir denken, wir singen es, weißt du?

So wie jetzt…

Bradshaw: Gibt es irgendetwas, das Ihnen in den Sinn kommt?

Diana: Alles, was dir in den Sinn kommt.

Denn es wird geprobt und …

Bradshaw: Was beschäftigt Sie gerade?

Diana: Wir versuchen einfach, alle zu harmonisieren, weißt du, und machen es so, wie jetzt?

Flo: Jungs

Flo: Männer

Bradshaw: Nun, das klang wunderbar

Diana: Mehr!

Bradshaw: Wenn ihr Mädels einen seltenen Moment zum Entspannen bekommt, was sind eure Hobbys?

Mary: Nun, äh, wir haben alle unterschiedliche Hobbys.

Meins kocht.

Das würdest du nicht

wirklich sagen, das ist ein Hobby, aber es ist meins.

Ich koche sehr gerne.

Für Jungs, und äh, und,

ähm, Florence, jetzt, sie mag es, zu kegeln.

Ich schätze, sie ist energisch,

Ich weiß es nicht, ich schätze, sie ist es.

Und Diane, sie hat gerne Kleider entworfen

Diana: Ja, das habe ich in der Schule gemacht.

Vor allem jetzt denke ich, dass ich gerne viel sammle

von Schmuck und verschiedenen seltsamen, weißt du, kleinen seltsamen Schuhen und ...

Bradshaw: Kleine alte Diamanten und solche Sachen!

Diana: Nein!

Bradshaw: Apropos Mode und Schmuck, ihr Mädels habt ein tolles Gespür dafür

sowohl auf der Bühne als auch außerhalb anziehen.

Wie entscheidest du, was du anziehst?

Mary: Nun, wir gehen in verschiedene Städte und was immer wir sehen, wir mögen eine Person

mag es vielleicht nicht, aber die anderen beiden mögen es, wir verstehen es!

Diana: Eine Sache, wir kaufen ständig ein, weil wir müssen, wir brauchen viel

Sachen für viele verschiedene Shows, also kaufen wir ständig ein

Bradshaw: Nun, das kann ich verstehen.

Nun, hier ist eine schwierige Frage – ich weiß

Es ist unfair dir gegenüber, aber wer sind deine Lieblingskünstler, nur einige davon?

Maria?

Mary: Nun, mal sehen.

Ich liebe die Four Tops und ich liebe die Temptations,

und nun, es gibt so viele!

Wie Nancy Wilson, ich wirklich, ich, weißt du,

Sie ist mein Idol, so und einige mehr, aber ich kann ihren Namen nicht nennen

Bradshaw: Nun, ich verstehe, ich denke, Sie haben es gut gemacht.

Diana: Nun, nicht nur die Beatles, ich liebe sie wirklich, aber es gibt so viele

Britische Gruppen, die wir trafen, als wir dort drüben waren, waren wirklich sehr

gute Gruppen und auch gute Freunde, aber als wir in London waren, haben wir die Lena gesehen

Horne-Show, und sie waren sehr fabelhafte Darsteller, sie hatten eine Show geplant

das war schön, weißt du?

Flo: Wir lieben ihn!

Nun, jetzt, wo ihr Mädchen geworden seid, würde ich sagen, Amerikas und die

weltweit führende Gesangsgruppe, was sind Ihre Pläne für die Zukunft?

Diana?

Diana: Nun, wir haben, ähm, wir haben große Pläne.

Gleich steigen wir ein

größere und bessere Clubarbeit im ganzen Land, und, äh, wir haben Buchungen

London und hier in New York und alles.

Aber, äh, wir wollen alle darauf eingehen,

äh, schauspielern.

Wir sind große Amateure, verstehst du, was ich meine?

Wir handeln auf und neben der Bühne!

Aber abgesehen davon werden wir immer weiterhin Aufzeichnungen für unsere machen

Fans, denn das lieben wir und wir wollen etwas tun, das sie dazu bringt

glücklich und das macht uns auch glücklich

Bradshaw: Nun, ich denke, solange du weiterhin so gut singst, wie du es tust,
