When I was 4 or 5 or 6

The sea rocked me to sleep.

And simple dreams would float to me

Like bubbles from the deep.

And sleep was like some opium

I smoked on foreign shores.

And dolphins saw me safely on

as my heartstrings pulled the oars.

And the ship was my bed,

and the waves were my pillow,

and the dark sky breathed,

and the sheets used to billow.

And I’d go sailing on,

Sailing on,

I’d go sailing on my dreams!

Seagulls ricoched against

the diamond-hard blue sea.

Mermaids sang and flying fish

would dance on air for me.

I made it home by sunrise,

as daylight filled the air.

My face was wet with brine and foam

and sand spilled from my hair.

And the ship is my bed,

and the waves are my pillow,

and the dark sky breathes,

and the sheets, they all billow.

And I go sailing on,

The north wind took me to

God knows where!

Oceans uncharted, drunk with salt air!

Every now and then,

I feel the need to take to sea,

To give myself to whining winds

and just go sailing free,

I only need to lay me down,

breathe so mild and then,

The ocean’s rhythm sweeps me up,

and I’m a child again.

And the ship is my bed,

and the waves are my pillow,

and the sheets they all billow.

Als ich 4 oder 5 oder 6 war

Das Meer wiegte mich in den Schlaf.

Und einfache Träume würden zu mir schweben

Wie Blasen aus der Tiefe.

Und der Schlaf war wie Opium

Ich habe an fremden Küsten geraucht.

Und Delfine sahen mich sicher weiter

als mein Herz die Ruder zog.

Und das Schiff war mein Bett,

und die Wellen waren mein Kissen,

und der dunkle Himmel atmete,

und die Laken wogen sich.

Und ich würde weiter segeln,

Weiter segeln,

Ich würde mit meinen Träumen segeln!

Möwen prallten dagegen

das diamantharte blaue Meer.

Meerjungfrauen sangen und fliegende Fische

würde für mich auf Sendung tanzen.

Ich habe es bis zum Sonnenaufgang nach Hause geschafft,

als Tageslicht die Luft erfüllte.

Mein Gesicht war nass von Salzlake und Schaum

und Sand floss aus meinen Haaren.

Und das Schiff ist mein Bett,

und die Wellen sind mein Kissen,

und der dunkle Himmel atmet,

und die Laken, sie bauschen sich alle.

Und ich segle weiter,

Weiter segeln,

Ich segle mit meinen Träumen!

Der Nordwind trug mich zu

Gott weiß wo!

Ozeane unerforscht, trunken von salziger Luft!

Hin und wieder,

Ich fühle das Bedürfnis, zur See zu fahren,

Um mich dem heulenden Wind hinzugeben

und einfach frei segeln,

Ich muss mich nur hinlegen,

atme so mild und dann,

Der Rhythmus des Ozeans fegt mich hoch,

und ich bin wieder ein Kind.

Und das Schiff ist mein Bett,

und die Wellen sind mein Kissen,

und die Laken bauschen sich alle.
