When I started working on this problem

Or I guess when it start working on me was probably really in the mid 80s

I found myself suffering from two things, one was a very lengthy sequence of

nightmares of nuclear destruction

They were very affective dreams

And associated with that was a sense of amazement that the dream that was that

awful could reflect a reality that could be that awful

And additional amazement at the fact that despite the production of tens and

thousands of weapons of unimaginable destruction

That people could go about their day-to-day lives without acting as if anything

fundamental, whatsoever had changed

I’ve never really been able to figure out why that disturb me so much when it

seemed to not disturb most of the people I knew

It doesn’t really matter

Spent my whole life trying to understand what evil was and more importantly,

what might be done about it

Human existence consists of the confrontation between

Before you can dare to talk about something like evil

You should do some thinking about what it is that you’re talking about

And I don’t think you can talk about it at all

Until you distinguish it from tragedy

The nature of human being is such that

It consists of a confrontation with the bounded finite, with the unbounded

infinite

That those are the bare facts of the matter

The world of experience as it presents itself to us is literally and not

metaphorically

Complex beyond our capacity to understand

And that means people deal in a real sense on an ongoing basis with the infinite

That fact is the reason why religious experience is essentially endemic to

mankind

It’s a healing universal, and it’s not because people believe

Human existence consists of the confrontation between

The finite and the infinite, the finite and the infinite

Human existence consists of the confrontation between

Human existence consists of the confrontation between

And religious systems merely take that into account

Now our finitude in the face of the infinite

Has some inevitable consequences

Those consequences are essentially the existential conditions of life

The finite is always overwhelmed by the infinite

It has to be, because it can’t encapsulate it

So what that means is

Suffering is central to the nature of human existence

Als ich anfing, an diesem Problem zu arbeiten

Oder ich schätze, als es anfing, bei mir zu wirken, war es wahrscheinlich wirklich Mitte der 80er Jahre

Ich litt unter zwei Dingen, von denen eine eine sehr lange Folge war

Alpträume der nuklearen Zerstörung

Es waren sehr affektive Träume

Und damit verbunden war ein Gefühl der Verwunderung, dass der Traum das war

schrecklich könnte eine Realität widerspiegeln, die so schrecklich sein könnte

Und zusätzliches Erstaunen darüber, dass trotz der Produktion von Zehnern und

Tausende von Waffen unvorstellbarer Zerstörung

Dass die Menschen ihrem Alltag nachgehen können, ohne so zu tun, als ob es irgendetwas wäre

grundlegend, was auch immer sich geändert hatte

Ich konnte nie wirklich herausfinden, warum mich das so sehr stört, wenn es so ist

schien die meisten Leute, die ich kannte, nicht zu stören

Es spielt keine Rolle

Ich habe mein ganzes Leben damit verbracht zu verstehen, was das Böse ist, und was noch wichtiger ist,

was man dagegen tun könnte

Bevor Sie es wagen können, über so etwas wie das Böse zu sprechen

Sie sollten darüber nachdenken, wovon Sie sprechen

Und ich glaube nicht, dass man überhaupt darüber reden kann

Bis Sie es von einer Tragödie unterscheiden

Die Natur des Menschen ist so

Es besteht aus einer Konfrontation mit dem begrenzten Endlichen, mit dem Unbegrenzten

unendlich

Dass dies die nackten Tatsachen der Sache sind

Die Welt der Erfahrung, wie sie sich uns präsentiert, ist buchstäblich und nicht

metaphorisch

Komplex, das unser Fassungsvermögen übersteigt

Und das bedeutet, dass Menschen sich im wahrsten Sinne ständig mit dem Unendlichen auseinandersetzen

Diese Tatsache ist der Grund, warum religiöse Erfahrung im Wesentlichen endemisch ist

Menschheit

Es ist ein universelles Heilmittel, und das nicht, weil die Menschen daran glauben

Die menschliche Existenz besteht aus der Konfrontation zwischen

Das Endliche und das Unendliche, das Endliche und das Unendliche

Die menschliche Existenz besteht aus der Konfrontation zwischen

Und religiöse Systeme berücksichtigen das lediglich

Nun unsere Endlichkeit angesichts des Unendlichen

Hat einige unvermeidliche Folgen

Diese Folgen sind im Wesentlichen die existenziellen Bedingungen des Lebens

Das Endliche wird immer vom Unendlichen überwältigt

Es muss sein, weil es es nicht kapseln kann

Was das also bedeutet, ist

Leiden ist von zentraler Bedeutung für die Natur der menschlichen Existenz
