I was under the dryer when the telegram came:

«Private John C. Miller was shot down in Vietnam»

Through my tears I read: «No more information at this time

He’s missin' in action somewhere on the Delta Line»

And they say that I should be proud;

he was fightin' for me

But he wasn’t fightin' for me, my Johnny didn’t have to fight for me

He was fightin' for the evils of society

Now I prayed night & day that my Johnny wouldn’t die

Love, faith & hope was all that kept me alive

Then 6 weeks later came that cold & heartless letter:

«Private Johnny was killed in action, number 54 327»

And they say that I should be proud;

he was keepin' me free

They say that I should be proud, those too blind to see

But he wasn’t fightin' for me, my Johnny didn’t have to die for me

He was fightin' for the evils of society

They shipped him home with medals of honor & glory

Even our local paper ran a front-page story

But the whole time gave him praisin' & said how honored I should be

But I don’t want no superstar, just the good man they took from me

And they tell me I should be proud;

he was fightin' for me

They say that I should be proud, those too blind to see

But he wasn’t fightin' for me, my Johnny didn’t have to die for me

He’s a victim of the evils of society

Ich war unter dem Trockner, als das Telegramm kam:

«Privat John C. Miller wurde in Vietnam abgeschossen»

Unter Tränen las ich: «Derzeit keine weiteren Informationen

Er fehlt irgendwo auf der Delta-Linie im Einsatz»

Und sie sagen, dass ich stolz sein sollte;

er hat für mich gekämpft

Sie sagen, dass ich stolz sein sollte, diejenigen, die zu blind sind, um es zu sehen

Aber er hat nicht für mich gekämpft, mein Johnny musste nicht für mich kämpfen

Er hat für die Übel der Gesellschaft gekämpft

Jetzt betete ich Tag und Nacht, dass mein Johnny nicht sterben würde

Liebe, Glaube und Hoffnung waren alles, was mich am Leben hielt

Dann, 6 Wochen später, kam dieser kalte und herzlose Brief:

«Private Johnny wurde im Einsatz getötet, Nummer 54 327»

Und sie sagen, dass ich stolz sein sollte;

er hielt mich frei

Sie sagen, dass ich stolz sein sollte, diejenigen, die zu blind sind, um es zu sehen

Aber er hat nicht für mich gekämpft, mein Johnny musste nicht für mich sterben

Er hat für die Übel der Gesellschaft gekämpft

Sie schickten ihn mit Ehren- und Ruhmesmedaillen nach Hause

Sogar unsere Lokalzeitung brachte eine Titelgeschichte

Aber die ganze Zeit lobte er ihn und sagte, wie geehrt ich sein sollte

Aber ich will keinen Superstar, nur den guten Mann, den sie mir genommen haben

Und sie sagen mir, ich sollte stolz sein;

er hat für mich gekämpft

Sie sagen, dass ich stolz sein sollte, diejenigen, die zu blind sind, um es zu sehen

Aber er hat nicht für mich gekämpft, mein Johnny musste nicht für mich sterben

Er ist ein Opfer der Übel der Gesellschaft
