She wanted to move.

She wanted to try something new.

She wanted to live in San Francisco

in a place with a view.

She wanted the sound.

She wanted the life all around.

She wanted the fun and the action of a livelier town,

but he…

He would still disagree,

'cause he loved the stillness of morning

and the wind in the trees.

He needed the stars.

He needed to say: «This is ours.»

And look at a field and a pasture

and a road with no cars.

He wanted a farm.

He wanted a horse in a barn.

He wanted a life in the country, far from the town,

so they…

They chose to stay;

they found a place where they hoped

they might both have their way.

Surprise!

But that compromise

was a life in the suburbs

that they both could despise

with nothing of either, yes and too much of each.

The things that they wanted were both out of reach:

No land for the garden, but too far from the stores.

No new folk to talk to, but loud neighbors next door.

Though traffic was endless, no one stepped outside.

An outpost of loners who’ve come there to hide.

Now why they stayed, all those years,

the answer can’t be found,

but there they were, there they fought,

and there they stood their ground

in my hometown

Sie wollte umziehen.

Sie wollte etwas Neues ausprobieren.

Sie wollte in San Francisco leben

an einem Ort mit Aussicht.

Sie wollte den Ton.

Sie wollte das Leben rundherum.

Sie wollte den Spaß und die Action einer lebhafteren Stadt,

doch er…

Er würde immer noch anderer Meinung sein,

weil er die Stille des Morgens liebte

und der Wind in den Bäumen.

Er brauchte die Sterne.

Er musste sagen: „Das ist unser.“

Und sieh dir ein Feld und eine Weide an

und eine Straße ohne Autos.

Er wollte einen Bauernhof.

Er wollte ein Pferd in einer Scheune.

Er wollte ein Leben auf dem Land, weit weg von der Stadt,

so dass sie…

Sie entschieden sich zu bleiben;

Sie fanden einen Ort, an dem sie hofften

sie könnten beide ihren Willen haben.

Überraschung!

Aber dieser Kompromiss

war ein Leben in der Vorstadt

die sie beide verachten konnten

mit nichts von beidem, ja und zu viel von beidem.

Die Dinge, die sie wollten, waren beide unerreichbar:

Kein Land für den Garten, aber zu weit von den Geschäften entfernt.

Keine neuen Leute zum Reden, aber laute Nachbarn von nebenan.

Obwohl der Verkehr endlos war, trat niemand nach draußen.

Ein Außenposten von Einzelgängern, die hierhergekommen sind, um sich zu verstecken.

Nun, warum blieben sie all die Jahre,

die Antwort kann nicht gefunden werden,

aber da waren sie, da kämpften sie,

und dort behaupteten sie sich

in meiner Heimatstadt
